Debossed Inky Resist

Hi everyone.  

Julia led the group for our zoom call we had in early February.  She had come across a video on Splitcoaststampers and thought the group would have fun giving it a try.

This is a very artistic technique that uses an embossing folder, heat embossing and smooshing of up to four colours of ink.  This is a mixed media technique, which means you will not end up with the same design, even if you used the same products.  It makes one-of-a-kind designs - bonus!

Supplies:

• Embossing folder
• Embossing buddy (anti-static powder)
• Versamark (or clear ink, white pigment ink, etc.)
• Watercolour Paper (or any water-friendly paper ... mixed media, bristol, etc.)
• White embossing powder
• Heat tool
• Paint brush for removing excess powder (optional)
• Inks - two shades of two colours (Distress Inks and Distress Oxide Inks work best)
• Water mister

Technique Instructions:

Following the video ...

• Use an embossing folder, LIGHTLY swipe Versamark (or clear ink, white pigment ink) over one side of the inside of folder (raised design side).

• Use embossing buddy (anti-static powder) on a piece of watercolour paper (or water-friendly card stock) and place inside inked embossing folder with anti-static side of paper touching Versmark ink side of embossing folder.  Run through your embossing machine.

• Sprinkle card stock with white embossing powder.  A little of the powder on the background is fine and just adds to the uniqueness of the design.  If there's a lot, then use a small paint brush to remove.  Heat to melt the embossing powder.

• Press several distress inks onto mat (Anna-Karin uses two colours in two shades each - four colours in total - and that worked really well).  Spritz with water and smoosh the card panel; let dry.  If you want a darker range of colour, repeat pressing inks, spritzing and smooshing to add another layer (or layers) until you are happy with the colour.

• For the last step, use distress oxides in the same colours at the distress inks above.  Space out your inks on your mat and spritz with water.  Lightly dab/slap your card panel into the wet ink.  The oxides will leave more dots of colour, adding a different texture to your card panel

Lots of scope with this technique by changing: embossing folder, colour of embossing powder, colour combinations of inks or types of ink.

Video:  Easy Letterpress technique using dies by Chrissie Stokes

Supplies:

• Die (symmetrical design)
• White water-friendly paper (watercolour paper, mixed media, bristol, etc.)
• Embossing Machine
• Ink

Technique Instructions:

Following the video above ...

• Using die, cut out image; set aside
• Ink back of die and place on piece of card stock
• Place the card stock and die into your embossing machine and run through.  This will emboss the solid image of your die onto the card and transfer the ink
• Please die-cut image on top

Metallic Watercolouring on Black Card

Supplies:

• Black or dark watercolour or mixed media paper
• Image (mix of line and solid images works best), sentiment stamp
• Ink (Versamark, pigment ink
• Metallic embossing powder
• Heat tool
• Metallic or Pearl paints that work on dark card (FineTec, gouache, etc.)
• Watercolour brushes

Technique Instructions:

Following the video above ...

• Stamp image and sentiment onto dark card and heat emboss in metallic.
• Watercolour images using paints.
• Add in extra details to image with brush strokes, dots, etc. (as per video). 
• Splatter with paint to finish.

* For Christmas cards, add snow and splatter with white

Vaseline Resist with Alcohol Inks

Supplies:

• Yupo
• Alcohol inks (AI's)
• Alcohol blending solution
• Vaseline (placed on a small tray or surface)
• Sponge
• Blowing tool (straw/air can/puffing tool)
• stamps of your choice
• Old rag to remove inks
• Latex gloves (optional but recommended)

Technique Instructions:

Following the video above ...

• Place some Vaseline on your small tray or surface and spread a thin even layer on the sponge then dab onto your stamp.
• Stamp using the image and you will see the imprint from the Vaseline.  If you are creating a background with multiple stamped images add more Vaseline between stampings.
• Have your Alcohol inks, Blending solution and puffer near by.  Drop the different colours of Alcohol inks on your Yupo, use your blending solution and puffer to help move the AI's over the Yupo.
• When you are happy with the design, use an old rag to remove the excess inks.  The Vaseline creates a resist so that the alcohol inks don't penetrate, leaving the outline image white.
• Clean the Vaseline off the stamps using soapy water with a cloth or very soft brush.

Faux Tearing

Supplies:

• Regular card stock
• Scrap paper
• Different colours of ink that work well together (Distress, DOX, Dye) - 3 colours work best
• Sponges

Technique Instructions:

• Tear several strips of scrap paper
• On card stock, starting near bottom, place torn strip just above bottom to use as a mask.
• Sponge first colour of ink at bottom.
• Place a torn strip of paper higher up and sponge with second colour
• Keeping moving up the card stock, adding torn strips as masks and sponging colour below them until you are at the top.
• Use as background, add stamped images or die-cuts on top to finish card.

White on Kraft Sponging

Hi Everyone.  Prior to starting our Group of Seven Cardmakers blog, our group kept in touch during Covid and started trying out new and (revised) older techniques.  We are including them as a reference for those that are interesting in trying them out.

March 2022

Supplies:

• kraft card stock
• white pigment ink
• sponge
• scrap paper to create masking 
• Stamps to complete scene
• Dark brown ink
• White acrylic pen (optional)

Technique Instructions:

• Tear paper to create torn edges for masking
• Place mask just up from bottom of card front (masking above areas), and sponge with white pigment ink.  Sponge solid white at torn edge, fading out as you go down.  Leave some open space at the bottom (kraft card colour).
• Move mask up page and repeat the masking and sponging with fading.
• Before removing the last mask, stamp an image in dark brown ink.
• Move mask up page and repeat the masking and sponging with fading. 
• Add in additional images as needed.
• Once you are approx. 2/3 way up the card front, stop masking and just lightly sponge white ink above to create a snow sky look, leave space around any images that are above the last snowhill, creating a halo effect around them.
• Add white highlights to your images using a white acrylic paint pen or diluted white ink or paint.
• Splatter with diluted white ink or white paint to create falling snow.
