Embossing with Dies

Hi everyone.  We are back with another wonderful card making technique. :)

In case you missed our last post (July - Northern Lights was late posting), we have revamped our blog to reflect our smaller Group of Designers.  We tried out the Northern Lights technique ... you can check it out HERE.

This month we are ... Embossing with Dies.  This technique stretches the use of your dies by turning them into embossed images.  We are also sharing three different videos which show a variety of ways to do this technique.  We hope you find these videos helpful.

Video:

Embossing with Dies by Scrapbook Expo (2:45).  General outline of supplies and technique.

Embossing with Metal Dies by Jo (first 3:00).  Tip:  Use 3M removable tape - does not rip card stock.

How to Use Dies to Emboss by Rebecca Keppel (12:07).  Lots of alternatives for this technique.

Supplies:

• Thin metal cutting dies
• Card stock
• Embossing machine with cutting plates
• Silicone mat (optional)

Technique Instructions:

• Create "sandwich" for your embossing machine in this order:
• Cutting Plate
• Thin metal die (cut side up)
• Card stock
• Silicone mat
• Depending on machine you may need a top cutting plate or shims
• Run through your embossing machine.  If your impression is not deep enough, add more shims until you are happy with the impression.  If your die cuts through your paper, then remove shims or plates to make your sandwich thinner.

Dry Embossed Highlights over Ink Blending

Hi everyone.  Today's card technique uses sponging, embossing folder and direct-to-paper with a stamp pad.  The possibilities are endless with all the amazing embossing folders available and the different colour combinations of ink.

Embossing Folder Fun by Jo Simons (16:33)

Another 3D Embossing Folder Technique by Jo Simons (15:39)

Supplies:

• Regular white card stock or whatever card you prefer for ink blending
• Inks (Distress Oxides work best for blending), 2-3 colours
• Sponges
• Optional:  Retangle stencil or masking tape
• Embossing Folder (3D folders work best)
• White Pigment ink (most brands will work well); OR light DOX inks against a dark background

Technique Instructions:

• Sponge card front with inks (you can do the whole thing or mask/stencil off border first)
• Let dry thoroughly or use heat tool to dry and set colours
• Emboss using an embossing folder - wipe ef clean afterwards
• Use White Pigment ink pad (or light Distress Oxide inks) to tap gently overtop of the dry embossed areas to highlight the textured areas of the design
• Let dry thoroughly before finishing your card
• Wipe ink pad with paper towel to remove any of the ink colours that transfer during tapping

Variations:

• Use coloured card stock or patterned paper instead of ink blending the background.

Vellum - Product Focus - Embossing (Dry, Heat, Wet)

Hi everyone.  This month we are adding a new category to Group of Seven ... Product Focus.  Vellum may be used in so many ways in place of card stock or over top to create a softened look.

This month we are focussing on Vellum and Embossing (Dry, Heat, Wet).

Thin or thick vellum can be used for all three ways of embossing.  Thick vellum does have advantage as you are less like to experience cracking, tearing or warping.

We recommend thick vellum for most of the techniques.

Below are a few suggestions for videos to try.

Vellum + Dry Embossing Video:

Vellum Techniques by Laurel Beard (5:22-7:10) - Dry embossing with ink blended background

• Dry emboss a panel of vellum.
• Use a few colours of ink to blend on the back of your panel.  Make sure to smooth the colours together.  Let dry or use heat tool to speed up drying.
• Turn over to complete your card.

Vellum + Heat Embossing Video:

Fabulous Vellum Backgrounds by Christine Stokes (7:28) - how to heat emboss vellum (tips and tricks) and layering stamping for a 3-D look.  You can use a large background stamp or individual stamps.

• Stamp image on front of vellum and heat emboss with white; let cool.
• Flip vellum over and stamp image on back in coloured ink (may use same image or different images).
• Flip vellum over so white embossing is at the front and mount onto card base.  This produces a card from with a 3-D look.  White stamping is in front, and coloured stamping looks recessed.
• Finish card.

Vellum + Wet Embossing Video:  (Embossing Pastes & Embossing Gels)

No video.  Here is a step-by-step:

• Use a vellum piece that is larger than the panel size you need.
• Adhere vellum to work surface (tape down, use magnets, etc. - any way that is strong enough to prevent vellum from curling, which will happen when applying wet paste or gel).
• Place stencil over secured vellum and add paste or gel using a palette knife or scraper.  Remove any excess paste by gently going over surface with a flat edge.
• Remove stencil.  Place stencil and palette knife in water right away or wash thoroughly.
• Leave vellum to air dry.  
• Remove tape or magnets and secure vellum to card.  
• Continue to finish card.
