Print Making with Die-cuts

Hi Everyone.  Prior to starting our Group of Seven Cardmakers blog, our group kept in touch during Covid and started trying out new and (revised) older techniques.  We are including them as a reference for those that are interesting in trying them out.

August 2020

Supplies:

• Watercolour paper (hot or cold press)
• Dies
• Inks (Distress Inks work best)
• Paint Brushes

Technique Instructions:

• Die-cut two of your image from watercolour paper.  Paint both of them using inks.
• Using one to make your background print, spritz with lots of water, flip over and press onto a watercolour paper card front.  Press lightly to create a soft background.  Repeat as necessary, less is more with this technique.
• This creates a mirror image of your die-cut.  If you want it to be an exact image of your die-cut, watercolour the back of the die before flipping it over and pressing onto your card base.
• Use remaining watercoloured die-cut to adhere over printed background.  Finish card.

Split 4 Stamping

Video:  Split 4 Stamping Technique by Creative Treehouse

Supplies:

• Full sheet of regular cardstock (8 1/2" x 11") (or watercolour or mixed media paper)
• Pencil
• Ruler
• Stamps (or stencils)
• Ink

Technique Instructions:

Following the video above ...

• Using pencil and ruler, light draw lines to divide full sheet of card into four equal parts (each part is the size of an A2 card - 4 1/4" x 5 1/2").
• Ink up your stamps and stamp at the center of the full sheet of paper.  Using the lines as guides, make sure your stamping is from the center out on each of the four areas.  You can use a stencil instead, sponging inks to create your designs.
• Cut the four areas apart and you have four card fronts.  Finish cards.

Creative Heat Embossed Backgrounds

Hi everyone.  Welcome to our first technique post for Group of Seven Cardmakers!

For January, our Zoom group tried a old/new technique.  Back in 2014, I saw a blogging friend create a background panel by randomly adding Versamark to white card stock, sprinkling with gold glitter embossing powder and heat setting.  So beautiful.

Fast forward to 2022 and another blogging friend (Jenny - My Paper Epiphany) made a card with a similar background technique, with a twist.  She used a metal sheet swiped with black Stazon ink and then added Versamark along with three different colours of embossing powders.  The background is gorgeous and artistic.  It really compliments her beautiful silver snowflake.  Below is a photo of Jenny's card, along with a link to her blog post, which includes how she did this technique.

Supplies:

• Card stock, vellum, acetate, metal sheets, etc. (anything that will take heat embossing)
• Ink (Versamark, clear ink, light-coloured pigment ink)
• Embossing Powder(s)
• Heat Tool

Technique Instructions:

• Pick a background card panel - white card stock, coloured card stock, vellum, acetate, metal, wood, etc.  Make sure it is heat proof.

• Add Versamark clear ink (or other clear or light-coloured pigment inks) randomly to the background card panel whichever way works best for you.  Suggestions:  splatter, paint on ink, smoosh, pounce scrunched cling wrap dipped in ink.

• Sprinkle the inked areas with embossing powder or powders (1-3 colours works best) and heat set.

• Alternative ... sprinkle embossing powder over card stock and melted on low heat on griddle.

A simple technique that makes beautiful backgrounds.

For the past couple of years, each month our group has had a Zoom call to try out new techniques (or revisit older techniques), as well as discuss art products.  It's been a lot of fun!  We are continuing to meet up in 2023.

We will be sharing our experiences here on this blog, Group of Seven Cardmakers.

Group of Seven is a Canadian group of iconic artists who inspired the name of our blog.

Each monthly post will include photos of the group's cards made using the monthly technique, along with links to their individual blog posts, which will include their experience with the technique and products they used.

On the right sidebar of this blog will be a list of Techniques we've tried, with written instructions (listed alphabetically).   Links of any videos we've used will be included in the written instructions.  I will be slowly adding previous techniques we've tried over the past couple of years.

We hope sharing our experience with techniques and products will be helpful to other cardmakers.
